NIKOLAI ASTRUP: VISIONS OF NORWAY

Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, MA

This exhibition at the Clark Art Institute was the first North American exhibition of the paintings and woodcuts of Norwegian artist Nikolai Astrup. Considered one of Norway’s most important artists, Astrup depicted his home environment of Lake Jolster and Sandalstrand in landscape paintings with bold, intense colors and magical realism. The exhibition design featured several interstitial “immersive rooms” where floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall photo murals of the actual landscapes that Astrup portrayed in his artwork were installed.
