Over the last 10 years, our firm has been a recognized leader in the Mass Timber movement, advocating for a more responsible carbon-neutral approach to building construction. Recognizing that it is difficult to make a meaningful global impact as a small firm, TSKP x IKD strategically approached the issue by targeting specific projects that would best utilize our skills in order to affect change. This included: organizing multiple mass timber exhibitions across the United States, including at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. which directly impacted federal legislation; developing a publication to be used as a tool by the US Forest Service and US Department of Agriculture to assist in planning and policy change at a federal level; developing a fully-funded competition for young architects to learn about and explore building with wood in order to impact their practices in the future; coordinating with Yale University to reuse wood from an exhibition project to create low-income housing for a community in New Haven, CT; twice securing a quarter-million dollar grant from the US Forest Service to develop a new hardwood building material that could positively impact rural economies; and developing innovative timber structures to demonstrate the benefits of timber construction.
