LYONS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Randolph, MA

The new Lyons School building provides the space and physical resources needed to engender skills such as critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity. The new school supports 405 students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade and includes the District-wide Therapeutic Learning Center (TLC) program. The project addressed overcrowding at the former Lyons school. The building massing is civic in scale, and reflects the use of the building by the community as well as by the students. The building massing places the gymnasium in the forefront because it is an asset that both the school and community will utilize. The interior of the building carefully opens larger spaces on the first floor, such as the gymnasium, cafeteria, and media center, to after-hours access by the public while keeping academic areas secure. The proposed location is accessible via public transportation, making it a desirable destination for public use. Building systems will have a service life of up to 50 years and use at least 20% less site energy than the current energy code would require, achieving a LEED silver rating (or higher) under the USGBC's LEED for Schools rating system.
